FinderCodes

What is FinderCodes?

FinderCodes is a lost and found system created to help reconnect people with their favorite things.

By using scannable QR codes and our own patent-pending system, FinderCode Smart Tags enable the finder of a lost item to instantly and anonymously contact the item’s owner. Our system works for anyone with a smartphone or an internet connection.

What are FinderCode Smart Tags?

FinderCode Smart Tags are durable identification tags that use QR codes and our patent-pending system to anonymously link an item with its owner. By scanning the smart tag’s code, or entering it online, a finder of a lost item can instantly and anonymously contact the item’s owner to coordinate the item’s return.

FinderCode Smart Tags are available in key-ring, adhesive, cord-sleeve, and iron-on formats.

How do I use FinderCode Smart Tags?

FinderCode Smart Tags attach to almost anything you want to safeguard, including pets, electronics, sports equipment, even clothing. Simply create an account with us, register each code, and then attach the tags to your designated items. To set up your account, you can either use the FinderCodes app (available for free in the Apple App Store, Google Play, or the Amazon App Store) or you can go to our website, www.findercodes.com.

FinderCode Smart Tags are sold in kits designed to meet your specific needs. Kits are available for Electronics, Travel, Pet Owner, Home, School Stuff, Kid Stuff, and Baby Things (coming soon). FinderCode kits are available online or at participating Office Depot® locations.

How do FinderCode Smart Tags work?

FinderCode Smart Tags are durable ID tags that each contain a unique QR code. With a FinderCodes account, you assign the code on each of your smart tags to items you’d like to protect—for example, your tablet computer, downhill skis, or even your pet. You choose how a finder can contact you (e.g., text, email, and/or phone*) and enter an optional reward amount. You can also write a message for the finder in your own words, include specific details such as your pet’s food, or upload a photo of your pet or item. When a finder scans the tag, or enters it online, they are shown your contact options, the reward amount, and any other information you’ve opted to show them. At the same time, you are sent an email and/or text message from FinderCodes notifying you that your tag was scanned. The message you receive will also contain a map of the finder's approximate location, if available. You and the finder can then coordinate the item’s return.

*Note that email and text messaging are done anonymously through FinderCodes, so your contact information is not exposed. Phone calling is not anonymous at this time.

Why are FinderCode Smart Tags better than traditional ID tags?

Unlike traditional identification tags, our smart tags:

  • allow you to keep your name, phone number, and address confidential
  • protect owner's and finder's identities by providing anonymous text and email messaging
  • can be easily updated so they are never obsolete
  • are GPS-enabled to show an item's location when the tag is scanned to help coordinate its return
  • instantly notify the finder of a reward
  • enable you to personalize a message to the finder and include detailed information about your lost pet or item
  • provide a quick and easy Re-Turnit™ shipping option using FedEx Office®

What is a QR Code?

You’ve probably seen them cropping up everywhere—on posters, mailers, even grocery items—those little black and white boxes filled with a jumble of horizontal and vertical lines and squares. Dubbed “Quick Response,” or QR codes, these codes are similar to UPC barcodes but are more powerful and versatile. QR Codes can be easily read by a smartphone (scanner app and working camera required) and can direct a device to connect to a website, make a call, or send a text or email.

Where can I get FinderCode Smart Tags?

You can buy our lost and found kits in the FinderCodes' online store or at participating Office Depot® stores. More locations coming soon!

What if I don’t have a smartphone?

If you can access www.findercodes.com with a web browser, you should be able to use the FinderCodes system.

Re-Turnit™

What is Re-Turnit?

FinderCodes has formed a strategic alliance with FedEx Office® to provide Re-Turnit™, our exclusive return shipping solution for our U.S. customers. Finders of a lost item, with authorization from the item’s owner, can bring it to any FedEx Office in the U.S. for direct shipment back to the owner. (International shipping not available at this time.)

How does it work?

  1. A finder scans an item’s smart tag or enters it on our website.
  2. The owner gives the finder the option to use Re-Turnit by filling out a brief online form indicating shipping preferences and payment information.
  3. The finder receives an email with instructions and a map of the nearest U.S. FedEx Office locations.
  4. The finder brings the item and the email to FedEx Office.
  5. FedEx Office packages and ships the item and sends the owner a tracking number.
  6. After the item has been shipped, the owner’s credit card is charged.

Can I set up Re-Turnit in advance?

You can set up your shipping address in advance. This will help expedite the process in the event you’d like to have a lost item shipped to you. Final shipping arrangements are made once an item is found.

Quick Start Guide

  1. Select Re-Turnit from the main navigation menu and log in to your account.
  2. Select the item to be shipped via Re-Turnit.
  3. If prompted, enter the finder's email address and location.
  4. Enter or edit your shipping information, as necessary.
  5. Choose your shipping service.
  6. Enter your billing information and click Approve.

The finder will be emailed instructions and a list of nearby FedEx Office® locations. Following instructions in the finder's email, FedEx Office will pack and ship your item. FedEx® will email you a tracking number, and your credit card will be charged.

Where can I use Re-Turnit?

Re-Turnit is currently available in the USA only.

Scanning

Can any phone or tablet scan a QR Code?

Only smartphones or tablets with a working camera and QR Code scanner application installed can scan a QR Code. The scanner in the FinderCodes App currently supports only those devices equipped with a rear-facing camera.

Where can I get a scanner app?

The FinderCodes App has a built-in scanner that will work with most devices (rear-facing camera currently requiredd). It is available for free on the Apple App Store, Google Play, and the Amazon App Store.

For those Android devices equipped with a front-facing camera, simply search Google Play or the Amazon App Store for a scanner app that is compatible with your device.

We also recommend the AT&T Code Scanner app that will work with most smartphones. Simply go to scan.mobi on your smartphone to download the right version for your device.

I don’t have a way to scan a QR code. Can I still use FinderCodes?

Yes. Simply enter the 8-character code from the smart tag at www.findercodes.com or on our app. Make sure to enter the code exactly as it appears. Codes are case-sensitive.

I’m unable to scan the code with my smartphone or tablet, what’s wrong?

The ability to scan a QR code will depend on the camera’s resolution and ability to focus on close objects.

  • Hold your device as steadily as possible so the camera can focus on the QR code.
  • Make sure there is adequate lighting for the camera to read the code.
  • The surface of the code needs to be as flat as possible. If you’re scanning an iron-on tag attached to fabric, for example, make sure to smooth the fabric out and place it on a flat surface.

If you’re using an Android device with a front-facing camera only, make sure the scanner app you’re using is compatible with your device. You may need to download a different scanner app from Google Play or the Amazon App Store. The scanner in the FinderCodes App currently supports only those devices equipped with rear-facing cameras.

Code Details

Why do I need to enter a category for my item?

The item category determines the type of item details you can list for each of your items, which helps us tailor the user experience for both owner and finder. For example, you can show the finder of your lost pet your vet’s name and phone number along with any medical conditions or allergies your pet may have. Each Pet detail has an on/off switch, so you decide which details a finder will see. For an electronic device, on the other hand, you can store the item's make, model, and serial number for your own private use. This is a secure and convenient way to store detailed information for your own reference.

How are Item Details used?

Item details are optional. You can use them to store detailed information about your pet or item for your own private use, or you can make certain details visible to the finder by setting their switch to “on.” For example, you may want a finder to instantly know if your pet has any medical conditions or how to contact your veterinarian. In the case of an electronic device, item details provide a secure, private, and convenient place to store an item’s make, model, and serial number for your own quick and easy reference. In addition to specific-use fields that have been tailored to each category, every category has a general description field, a “My Notes” field for your own use, and the ability to upload a photo of your pet or item.

What information would I put in a message to the Finder?

This is an optional feature that allows you to write your own personal message, or make an appeal, to a finder. You can include information that may help get your item or pet quickly and safely returned. Examples of what to write include:

  • an explanation of an item's sentimental value
  • a list of any special needs for a pet
  • a simple thank you for finding and returning the item

How do I best use FinderCode Smart Tags with my pet?

Our system enables you to show a finder detailed information to help get your pet safely back home. In Pet Details, you can create a customized profile for your pet, including:

  • your pet's name and preferred food
  • any emergency medical conditions or allergies
  • your veterinarian's name and phone number
  • secondary emergency contact phone number (in case you're out of town)
  • your pet's photo
  • a personalized message to the finder with any other special instructions

Try fitting all that onto a traditional tag! Each pet detail includes an on/off feature, so you decide how much information the finder will see when your pet’s tag is scanned. Plus you have the ability to update the information at any time, including increasing a reward amount or changing your address or phone number.

How do I upload a photo?

From the FinderCodes app:

  1. Log in to your account, select your item or pet from the Codes menu (or enter a new code), then click Item Details or, if a pet, Pet Details.
  2. Click Photo. You will have a choice to Take Photo or Choose Existing
  3. If you select Take Photo, your device’s camera will launch. Take the photo and then select either Use or Retake
  4. If you select Choose Existing, you will be directed to select a photo from your computer.
  5. If you would like the finder to see the photo, set Show to finder to On
  6. Tap the Back button to return to Item Details or Pet Details. Tap the Save button to save your changes.

From our website:

  1. Log in to your account and go to the Codes menu.
  2. Enter a new code or click Edit on an existing code. You will be taken to the Item Details page.
  3. Click the Choose Photo button and select a photo from your computer.
  4. If you would like the finder to see the photo when your item’s tag is scanned, click to check the box next to Display to Finder
  5. When you’re finished, click Update to save the information.

How do I create Wallpaper?

This feature works only from the FinderCodes app and is currently available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch only.

If you’re protecting your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with a FinderCode Smart Tag, the FinderCodes app gives you the ability to set an image of the item’s tag as your Lock Screen Wallpaper.

  1. Log in to your account.
  2. If you would like to create wallpaper for an existing code, go to Codes and select your mobile device from your list; otherwise tap New tag to enter a new code.
  3. From the Code Detail menu, tap Category, then select Phone/Tablet from the dropdown menu. Tap Save
  4. You should be returned to the Code Detail menu.
  5. Tap Create Wallpaper. (Note the item’s category must be set to Phone/Tablet for the Create Wallpaper button to appear.)
  6. You will be taken to the Wallpaper page, where you will see a preview of the wallpaper image. Read the instructions at the top of the page, then tap Create Wallpaper.
  7. An image bearing your tag’s FinderCode will be added to Photos on your device. You can then set the image as your Lock Screen Wallpaper from the Settings Menu on your device.

If I set my FinderCode tag as my Wallpaper, do I still need to put a FinderCode tag on my device?

This feature works only from the FinderCodes app and is currently available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch only.

We recommend adhering a FinderCode tag to your device as well as setting it as Wallpaper. Should your phone or tablet run out of power, a finder would not be able to see the Wallpaper tag.

I've protected my device with a passcode. Will a finder be able to see my Wallpaper tag?

This feature works only from the FinderCodes app and is currently available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch only.

Yes. Since the FinderCode wallpaper tag will appear on your Lock Screen, the image will appear when the device is powered on and its screen is in the lock position.

Should I set both my Lock Screen and Home Screen Wallpaper with a FinderCode tag?

This feature works only from the FinderCodes app and is currently available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch only.

It’s only necessary to set your Lock Screen Wallpaper. Since your app icons float on top of your home screen wallpaper when your device is unlocked, the QR Code portion of your FinderCode tag would not be scannable.

How to Attach Tags

Plastic Tags

Attach the supplied rings to tags and then to the designated item. Attach luggage tags with the supplied straps.

Adhesive Tags

For best results, make sure the area is clean and dry before applying adhesive tags. We recommend using rubbing alcohol to remove any oil or residue. For optimal scannability, position the tag so that the code portion lies as flat as possible.

Iron-on Tags

Always be mindful of the type of fabric you are ironing. (See partial list of non- recommended fabrics below.) When applying FinderCode iron-on tags to your garment, use a heat setting on your iron that you would normally use for the fabric. NOTE: DO NOT USE STEAM. Make sure the steam setting is OFF.

  1. Place your garment on an ironing board or other flat surface. Set your iron to the highest heat setting for the fabric you are ironing. Allow iron to preheat.
  2. Apply heat for approximately 20 seconds to smooth the fabric area where the FinderCodes™ iron-on tag will be applied.
  3. Peel the FinderCode iron-on tag off the plastic carrier sheet. Place it face-up on the pre-heated garment in the area where you wish to apply it.
  4. To protect the label from the direct heat of the iron, place the previously removed plastic carrier sheet SHINY SIDE UP on top of the iron-on tag. Next, set the iron on the carrier sheet and hold for approximately 20 seconds. DO NOT USE ANY IRONING MOTION OR STEAM.
  5. Allow to cool for approximately 30 seconds. Slowly remove the plastic carrier sheet. Be careful as the carrier sheet may still be hot to the touch.

FinderCode iron-on tags have been tested with a wide range of irons including Rowenta, Sunbeam, Hamilton and Panasonic. The material for FinderCode iron-on labels has been designed to work with a typical household iron on a high heat setting. Always be mindful of the type of fabric that you are ironing as its tolerance to heat is important. Some fabrics may not tolerate the heat necessary to apply FinderCode iron-on tags.

DO NOT APPLY IRON-ON TAGS TO THE FOLLOWING FABRICS:

  • Silk
  • Delicate Knits
  • Dirty or soiled garments

Warning: Always use caution when using a heated iron especially around children. NEVER leave an iron unattended. Follow the iron’s safety instructions provided by its manufacturer. Keep heated objects away from children. Dispose of all plastic packaging and unused components immediately as they may be a choking hazard.

Privacy

What information will a finder see?

A finder will be able to see the phone number(s) you’ve elected to make available for phone calls, the reward you've offered (if any), and any Code Details you've elected to display to the finder.

A finder will not see your name, email address, text messaging phone numbers, or any phone numbers or Code Details you elect to keep private.

Will I see a finder's contact information?

You will not see a finder’s contact information if you communicate via FinderCodes’ anonymous email or text messaging.

You may see a finder’s phone number if they call you and you have Caller ID.

If the finder’s device supports it and the finder allows it, FinderCodes will send you a link to a map of the finder’s approximate location at the time they scanned the tag.

I found an item. Will the owner see my phone number or email address?

Text and email messages sent through FinderCodes will appear to be from FinderCodes; the owner will not see your phone number or email address in these cases.

If you call the owner, and the owner has Caller ID, then the owner may see your phone number.

I found an item. What happens if I share my location with the owner?

If your device supports it, your approximate GPS (Global Positioning System) coordinates will be sent to the owner along with a link to a map showing your approximate location.

This may help to arrange a meeting place, but be aware that coordinates are not always accurate and may be off by several blocks.

Will I receive spam or unsolicited email?

FinderCodes values the privacy of all finders and owners and will not share your contact information.

Our adhesive and iron-on smart tags are designed to stay in place. Removing an adhesive tag would likely compromise its readability and adhesive qualities and is not recommended.
